You might want to consider bumping this up one weekend. On October 3th and 4th., the California QSO Party is held. One of the largest national contests of the year. There are categories for all bands and modes for both HF (160, 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10m) and FM (10, 6 and 2m). Techs can compete on 10 USB and FM and 6 and 2m FM
It would be more interesting if the organizers could set up a small contest station there to compete on the different bands.
In addition to the testing, prospective hams or those who are testing could get on the air in the simplest of ways (under licensed supervision, as second party traffic)...all that is required is a short simple exchange of RST report, county name, and serial (QSO) number....then it's back to calling CQ. This is an easy introductory way for people to get on the air.
